Belmullet and the Wild Atlantic Way

Belmullet and the Wild Atlantic Way

Post by In1 Solutions on Blog

The coastal town of Belmullet is less than an hour’s drive from Twin Trees Hotel and Leisure Club, Ballina.

As it name tells us, Belmullet is the at mouth of the beautiful Mullet peninsula. It is also the heart of Erris and has two bays to visit – Black Sod and Broadhaven.

Belmullet is part of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht area so you can practice your cúpla focail if you wish (although the locals speak English too).

The area is renowned for its fishing and golf. Fresh water and sea anglers will be in seventh heaven whilst golfers can lose a day or two on the internationally renowned Carne Golf Links.

If you fancy something more exciting, you can try your hand at watersports including surfing and kite-surfing.

History and Culture

The area was home to Riocard Bairéad, Poet of Erris, and noted United Irishman. The area also witnessed the Land League’s Monster Meetings.

Readers of the Ulster Cycles will recognise Táin Bó Flidhais, the Mayo Táin, one of the famed Cattle Raid tales if you visit Rathmorgan and Greencastle on the Mullet Peninsiula.

Lovers of John Millington Synge’s work will be right at home too in Erris as this is also Playboy Country.

From here, you can travel to Ballycroy and its wonderful park and make sure you leave plenty of time to explore Achill Island.
