Westport and the Wild Atlantic Way

South of Newport and along the Wild Atlantic Way, you are in for a treat when you visit Westport.

Westport is quaint and picturesque with its tree-lined promenade along the Carrow Beg river. But it also enjoys a thriving tourist trade and vibrant nightlife. So, it’s a great place to enjoy a meal and a pint whilst listening live to the best of local musical talent.

Westport is a designated heritage town and boasts its own unique charm. Its present location was planned and designed by the Browne family over 200 years ago but the area is rich in history that dates back to the rule of the Umaill clan. The great Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley, was the most famous descendant of the family and she ruled Clew Bay and the surrounding seas in the 1500s.

The Quay is close to the town and, beyond that, blue flag beaches and, of course, Croagh Patrick. Make sure you pay a visit to Westport House on the way, though. Not only is it a fine, stately home but also a Pirate Adventure Park! Guaranteed a family fun day out.

Newport and the Wild Atlantic Way

After exploring Achill Island, you can head east, past Mulranny and into Newport.

The village of Newport nestles in Clew Bay at the mouth of Newport River. Its sheltered harbour is a welcome stop for any boating enthusiasts.

The Great Western Greenway glides through Newport too so it is a haven for cyclists and walkers. The traditional pubs and cafés are the perfect places to relax and rest before you take in the sights of the local area and the Wild Atlantic Way.

Rockfleet Castle is just a few kilometers outside the village. Built in the mid-16th Century, Rockfleet Castle once belonged to Grace O’Malley, or Granuaile, The Sea Queen of Connacht.

Otherwise, stay closer to home and take the Heritage Trail around Newport before heading back to Twin Trees Hotel, about a 40 minutes’ drive away if you head towards majestic Nephin.

Achill and the Wild Atlantic Way

No trip to magical Mayo is complete without a visit to beautiful Achill Island.

Achill is only an hour and a half’s drive from Twin Trees Hotel and Leisure Club, and is one of the places you have to visit before you die!

From Mulranny, you take a short jaunt across the Corraun Peninsula to Achill which itself is spectacular – from Corraun Hill you can drink in views of Clew Bay and the Mullet Peninsula to the north.

Our favourite means of travel for this part is by bike or on foot as the Western Greenway follows the most scenic route across the bridge at Achill Sound and on to the island of Achill where people have lived for thousands of years.

The easy option is to take the car to travel the Atlantic drive and loop around the island’s minor roads.

One minute you will pass golden strand and cliff pass, then drive down a mountain and across bog. Otherwise, you can stop and relax in one of the island’s traditional Irish pubs – Achill embodies the Wild Atlantic Way.

Places To Visit

Keel Beach  is superb for water sports with the spectacular Slievemore rising dramatically behind it. On the slopes of Slievemore, you can visit the Deserted Village, abandoned from the time of An Gorta Mór, the Great Hunger.

Head west through Dooagh and up over the cliff road to the very end of the road. Keem Bay is the surprise that awaits you – a small Blue Flag beach in a sheltered bay and perfect for snorkelling.

History is never far away no matter where you go on Achill Island. There are holy wells and Mortello Towers which testify to the religious and military history of the area. Carrickkildavnet Castle on the south east coast is a must-see. Built in the 1400s by the O’Malley Clan, it was later the stronghold of the famous Gráinne Mhaol, or Grace O’Malley – the Pirate Queen.

Belmullet and the Wild Atlantic Way

The coastal town of Belmullet is less than an hour’s drive from Twin Trees Hotel and Leisure Club, Ballina.

As it name tells us, Belmullet is the at mouth of the beautiful Mullet peninsula. It is also the heart of Erris and has two bays to visit – Black Sod and Broadhaven.

Belmullet is part of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht area so you can practice your cúpla focail if you wish (although the locals speak English too).

The area is renowned for its fishing and golf. Fresh water and sea anglers will be in seventh heaven whilst golfers can lose a day or two on the internationally renowned Carne Golf Links.

If you fancy something more exciting, you can try your hand at watersports including surfing and kite-surfing.

History and Culture

The area was home to Riocard Bairéad, Poet of Erris, and noted United Irishman. The area also witnessed the Land League’s Monster Meetings.

Readers of the Ulster Cycles will recognise Táin Bó Flidhais, the Mayo Táin, one of the famed Cattle Raid tales if you visit Rathmorgan and Greencastle on the Mullet Peninsiula.

Lovers of John Millington Synge’s work will be right at home too in Erris as this is also Playboy Country.

From here, you can travel to Ballycroy and its wonderful park and make sure you leave plenty of time to explore Achill Island.
