Top 5 Things To Do In Mayo

Here are my top 5 things to do in Mayo. I would be interested to hear if yours are different.

Special guest post by Róisín

Walking in Mayo Twin Trees Hotel BallinaAre you a sensation seeker looking for things to do in Mayo?

Whether it’s speeding through Mayo’s south-westerly winds while cycling the Greenway, climbing Ireland’s holiest mountain or taking in the scenic sights of Achill Island, Mayo undoubtedly offers a wide range of things to do.

1: The Greenway

Being Ireland’s longest off-road cycling and walking trail, the Greenway provides all outdoor-lovers a chance to experience the beautiful nature and landscape of Mayo.

You really are spoilt for choice. You can decide whether you want to whizz along the route to Westport, Mayo’s most popular tourist destination, or just simply discover the sights of the majestic Achill Island. The Greenway also winds its way through Newport and Mulranny.

Without a doubt, Mayo’s Greenway is fantastic for a safe, family break away or even just a day to capture the natural beauty of Mayo’s landscape.

2: Salmon Capital of Ireland – The River Moy in Ballina

Ballina’s River Moy attracts thousands of fishermen from across the globe each year. It majestically meanders through Ballina, past our quaint quaint quay, before spilling into Killala Bay.

With an estimated 8 to 12 thousand salmon caught each year,  why miss out on an opportunity to enjoy doing what you love where the great fish are sustainable?

However, if fishing just isn’t your thing, why not take advantage of the Moy for the many other recreational activities it has to offer. Kids who are looking for fun can paddle down the Moy with Harbour Sup and Sail’s stand up paddle boarding in Ballina town. Otherwise relax on a cruise down the Moy with Moy Estuary boat trips before dining out for an evening meal.

3: Achill

With breath-taking views and stunning scenery, Achill Island boasts an abundance of sheer and utter natural beauty which attracts visitors from far and wide.

You can surf the waves on Keel’s Blue Flag beach or cycle the perimeter of the island while taking in views that would put the Grand Canyon to shame. Achill Island welcomes all visitors who appreciate the elegance it’s beautiful landscape.

4: Croagh Patrick

Follow in the footsteps of St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint and climb Ireland’s holiest mountain. Just over an hour’s drive from Knock Airport, Croagh Patrick peaks above Westport, Ireland’s tidiest town in 2015. Steeped in history, Croagh Patrick allows visitors to deepen their faith on a spiritual journey to it’s peak. Attracting approximately 1 million visitors annually for both religious and recreational activities, Croagh Patrick is unique and one of a kind in Ireland. On ‘Reek Sunday’, the last Sunday in July, over 25,000 pilgrims visit Croagh Patrick not only as a celebration of their religious life but also because of awe-inspiring views and challenging climb.

Twin Trees Hotel is just over an hour’s drive away from the holy Mountain too.

5: Ballina

Are you a budding historian, a golfer, a swimmer, a jockey, a festival-goer, a hiker, a runner, a book-worm, or simply just someone who would like to take a break and relax? Bustling Ballina, a town which dates back as far as the 1300’s, is the town for you.

The recently-opened Jackie Clarke Museum hosts an intriguing collection of historical material for all those interested in local and national history. You can take a stroll into Belleek woods or play a spot of golf in Ballina golf club.

Or just go for the night-life, fine food and great company.

French Mayo Festival BallinaThe two-day festival takes place on the last Friday and Saturday in August (26th – 27th), and aims to build on the unique historical connection enjoyed by Mayo with France, which dates from the landing of General Humbert in Kilcummin, near Killala, in 1798.
