In the first of a series of posts about Mayo and the Wild Atlantic Way, we begin with Ballina, Salmon Capital of Ireland, and home to the Twin Trees Hotel.
Ballina is a vibrant town with many fine restaurants and a thriving nightlife which makes it a foodie destination for connoisseurs across the country. It hosts famous festivals such as the Ballina Salmon Festival and the French Mayo Festival.
It offers something for everyone, and not just the bright, young things who enjoy a great pint, fine food and a bit of craic.
Ballina straddles the mighty River Moy, renowned for its salmon fishing. Killala Bay is nearby and the golden strand of Enniscrone just beyond that, so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll or the many water sports on offer.
To the east you can explore the Ox Mountains or lose yourself in the Nephin Beag range to the west.
History and Culture
Ballina town is also a must-visit for culture vultures and history buffs alike. Ballina Arts Centre is never short of fantastic entertainment and many of the famous bars host the best of local musical talent including, of course, legendary traditional musicians.
A short stroll from Twin Trees Hotel along River Brusna and River Moy, you can visit the beautiful St. Muredach’s Cathedral. Ardnaree is just around the corner and site of an important battle in the Tudor conquest of the area.
Whilst in the centre, make sure you visit the Jackie Clarke Collection which is home to a private collection of over 100,000 items dating back over 400 years.
To the north of the town is Moyne Abbey which dates from the 15th Century. Follow the road on out and you reach Killala, site of the French landing in 1798. Battle sites from this rebellion are dotted around the county. There is a monument to the French General and his ill-fated mission in Ballina centre and you can trace his army’s route along the Slí Humbert, or Humbert’s Way.
As well as activities in the sea, rivers and lakes in and around Ballina, you can enjoy football, soccer and rugby. The area is home to some of the most successful clubs in the country.
The town is also host to busloads of golfers as we have two championship links courses on our doorstep in Enniscrone and Carne, as well as the excellent parkland course in Ballina.
